A Dionysian Carnival on Naxos - Event Program

01 Mar 2016From March 1st through Clean Monday, March 14th, Naxos, the largest island of the Cyclades, transforms into an interactive stage hosting a multitude of events for Carnival.

Carnival

Carnival is celebrated in a unique form on Naxos, as the customs involved are an evolution of ancient Dionysian fetes, taking place in the same time of year as the ancient Anthesteria.

What started as a carnival parallel event based on ancient Dionysian rituals by the local theatre group, has grown over the years to a sort of group catharsis that begins with participants gathering in the Castle to receive their “costume,” “torch,” and “face” for the night.
